Innovation 30: Young people shaping a sustainable future – UNICEF

As the climate crisis increases, so do the challenges facing the younger generation. At the same time, young people are almost absent in climate policies, action and investments at all levels. We need investments in innovative ideas, new technologies and clever inventions to tackle climate crisis and protect children and their families.
Young people, while being disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis, are also at the forefront of creating solutions. Through their creative innovations, they are addressing urgent global challenges, catalyzing a revolution in the tech industry, and effecting transformative changes in our society on a global scale.
“Young Climate Innovators Shaping the Future,” a UNICEF-led initiative underscores the importance of investing in innovative ideas and technologies by young people, acknowledging their unique challenges and contributions in the fight against the climate crisis. This enhanced focus not only recognizes the impact of climate change on youth but also positions them as key drivers of transformative solutions through localized and global actions. The initiative aims to empower youth under 30, giving them a platform as stakeholders, technical experts, and change-makers, thereby fostering a more inclusive and effective approach to climate action.

At COP28, 24 young innovators selected by Innovation30 have pitched their game changing climate solutions to world leaders and decision makers. The collaboration between government, private sector, and the innovation community is critical for scaling breakthrough climate solutions developed by young people for a sustainable future. Speaking to the audience in a holographic exhibition, most of the young innovators did not have to travel to Dubai.

“We want to change the narrative, from victims to shapers of the solution, from voices to active beneficiaries of financing structures.”
In Innovation30, UNICEF works together with a consortium of innovation accelarators nominating and vetting climate solutions from around the world, such as independent climate scientists from Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) Canopy and Imperial College London – Undaunted. The climate change innovation activity is run in partnership with the Royal Institution. More about UNICEF and their partners in Innovation30 can be found here.
