Ludlow Public Schools focus on technology – The Cub – The Cub

Many people know my dad, Micheal Assaf, the IT Director for Ludlow Public Schools. Whenever new technology such as computers, smartboards, cameras, etc, needs to be hooked up, he is there to work. Technology is the reason for pinpoint learning here at Ludlow High School. From the resources learned on distributed Chromebooks to the lessons projected on smartboards, electronics are the key to progressive learning.
Middle School
Experience is everything; all my life I was surrounded by technology. For the past three summers, I worked with the IT department for Ludlow Schools. From getting the Chromebooks ready for all students to setting up classroom wiring and smartboards — IT taught me many useful skills. It has built me a better foundation in understanding basic concepts about electronics.
Work such as setting up computers in rooms and wiring smartboards have taught me essential skills for working in the tech field. I spoke with Technology Support Specialist Kevin Ferabelo who manages the middle school. “I believe that when you work for IT over the Summer it helps you experience what’s involved in the technology that’s used by staff and students every day during the school year. Whether it be from the inner workings of Chromebook and desktop PC’s to the setup and maintenance of the classroom technology. It’s really a great gig for students who have a passion for technology,” he said
The job involves resetting, cleaning, and relabeling all of the Chromebooks used at the middle school. Once this step is completed, an adventurous journey to every classroom is done. This is to ensure that all of the teachers have a proper electronic setup. Taken from my vast experience working with the Ludlow Public Schools IT department, it’s a great experience for everyone.
Harris Brook Elementary School
Once the Middle School is finished, the next task is the new elementary school: Harris Brook. The school presents four grade levels and a ton of electrical components. All rooms are powered with smartboards and state-of-the-art desktops. Out of all the schools, Harris Brook has to be the toughest job. The school has a very modern design,  however it comes with a fun challenge. Like the middle school, all Chromebooks need to be reset and cleaned. A final pursuit is then completed by testing all of the smartboards and computers in every room.
“I think every student is capable of the job,” said Assaf. Not only will you gain experience with technology, but managing a portion of IT will prepare you for any future career. Things such as speed, organization, and responsibility are all built on working  with the IT department.” Given my time working in such a massive school with tons of Chromebooks, all of those skills are undoubtedly tested.
High School
I have been at Ludlow High School for three years now. Recently there have been major tech upgrades like better computers and brand new touch screen smart boards. All of these advancements are made by the tech department.
I spoke to Senior Technology Support Specialist Carlos Sanchez who works at the High School: “In a school environment, I feel technology helps to improve on any limitations or restrictions a student may have to obtain the education they need.”
Whenever tasked with electronics, he can set up or fix anything at hand. History teacher Mrs. Zianio had a great description of him: “We need five Carlos’s! As we have become more technologically driven; he’s been in constant demand throughout the building”.
Technology is constantly expanding its boundaries and proves extremely beneficial for every school. While working at the High School with Carlos new electronics are always a top priority. Setting up new computers, projectors, and smart boards are a great resource I have learned while working.
My opinion on technology is built solely on my decision to pursue it as a career.  However, even people who aren’t working electronics as their job can benefit tremendously from it. Understanding technology helps people navigate everyday tasks more efficiently, such as managing finances and staying connected with friends and family. For example, I can talk to my grandparents who live in Portugal because we are both able to operate technology efficiently. It also opens up opportunities for personal growth, like learning new skills or hobbies through online courses and tutorials. Being exposed to technology can improve problem-solving abilities and boost confidence in using everyday digital tools. In an increasingly digital world, having a decent sense of technology enhances the overall quality of everyday life.
Technology is important in schools because it makes learning more engaging and accessible. It offers students and teachers a wide range of resources that can make lessons more interesting and easier to understand. With technology, students can learn at their own pace and get help much easier. It also allows students to develop important digital skills they will need in the future. Technology also allows for better communication and collaboration between students and teachers both in the classroom and with people you will meet in the future.
