The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will be shutting down part of U.S. Highway 75 (Central Expressway) this week to convert the existing HOV lanes into “Technology Lanes” as part of a three-year project, NBC DFW reported. The northbound HOV lane will be closed through the fall of 2025.
Many have noticed that the pylons between the HOV lane and main lanes have already been removed. The change from HOV lanes to technology lanes aims to reduce congestion on daily travel for both sides of Central Expressway depending on the time of day. During rush hours, southbound in the morning and northbound in the evening, HOVs, low-emissions vehicles and motorcycles will be allowed to use the technology lanes. In non-peak hours, single-occupant vehicles will be allowed to use the lanes.
The $57 million project will include removing all of the pylons on Central Expressway between I-635 and Highway 121, restriping the HOV lanes, reconstructing the center barriers, constructing full-color dynamic message signs and new overhead signs and adding high-mast lighting.
The peak hours are defined as 7 to 9 a.m. southbound and 4 to 6 p.m. northbound.
The project will be rolled out in portions, starting with Roll 1 at 635 to Beltline Road, Roll 2 from Beltline Road to Campbell Road, Roll 3 from Campbell Road to Highway 190, Roll 4 from Highway 190 to Parker Road, Roll 5 from Parker Road to Legacy Drive, Roll 6 from Legacy Drive to McDermott Drive, Roll 7 from McDermott Drive to Stacy Road and Roll 8 from Stacy Road to Highway 121.
The project is expected to be completed in late 2026, and an exact timeline for each “Roll” is not yet available. Future lane closures will be added to the drivetexas.org map.
